General Principles

  1. Sabbath is God’s gift, not a burden.
  • Genesis 2:2–3 – God rested after creation and set the pattern for humanity.
  • Exodus 20:8–11 – Rest is part of honoring God and enjoying His provision.
  1. Sabbath is meant to be a blessing.
  • Mark 2:27 – “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.”
  • Focus on what refreshes your body, mind, soul, and relationships.
  1. Sabbath is personal and intentional.
  • Traditionally, Sabbath was a 24-hour period of rest and worship set aside to express trust in God and to enjoy His good gifts.  However, there’s no one-size-fits-all formula. Seek God’s guidance in prayer about how to observe it as an individual or family.
  • Sabbath can include worship, Scripture, rest, family time, recreation, or serving others in love.
  1. Sabbath involves stopping, slowing, and reflecting.
  • Remove unnecessary obligations, work, or distractions when possible.
  • Practice gratitude and awareness of God’s provision.

Practical Suggestions

  • Schedule rest intentionally: set aside time to step away from work and digital distractions.  Sunday is an ideal time for many but choose another day if that works better.  If you have children, you may want to start Sabbath with a prayer of thanks for God’s gift of rest.
  • Engage in worship or Scripture reading: prioritize corporate and individual worship.
  • Spend meaningful time with family or friends: meals, conversation, recreation, fun.
  • Enjoy creation and hobbies: take walks, read, listen to music, or enjoy a variety of hobbies.
  • Serve with joy: small acts of kindness or hospitality can honor God and bless others.

Reflective Questions for Individuals or Families

Spiritual Life

  • Do I intentionally spend time with God on Sabbath?
  • Do I feel spiritually refreshed after this time?

Physical and Emotional Rest

  • Am I truly resting my body and mind, or filling the day with chores/activity?
  • Are my Sabbath activities renewing or depleting me?

Relationships

  • Do I spend meaningful time with family or friends without distraction?
  • Does my Sabbath encourage connection, encouragement, or laughter?

Work and Technology

  • Do I step away from work, emails, and screens to create space for rest?
  • Are there distractions I could remove to better enjoy Sabbath?

Delight and Joy

  • Do I experience joy and refreshment in my Sabbath activities?
  • Are there things I could add or change to help Sabbath feel more life-giving?

Self-Reflection

  • How do I know when I’ve truly rested spiritually, emotionally, and physically?
  • How can I invite God to guide my Sabbath practices this week?

Closing Thought

Sabbath is God’s invitation to stop, rest, delight, and be renewed. Take time to listen, reflect, and allow God to teach you the rhythm that honors Him and restores your life.  Taking advantage of this wonderful and generous gift from God honors Him and brings rest and enjoyment.

Family Business | February 2, 2026

To help our church family understand how we are led, we utilize a “Vine and Trellis” model where our Elders provide spiritual shepherding, our Management Team oversees resource stewardship, and our Staff Team equips the congregation for daily ministry. This balanced structure ensures that we remain biblically grounded and operationally sustainable as we work together to help the lost get found and the found live free. We invite those who are fully engaged in this mission to join us in prayer and participate in the upcoming 2/3rds affirmation process for our new leadership candidates.
